Modernist forms in Columbus, Indiana

Commercial Design

27 June 2021

We got to stop for lunch in Columbus IN and it was so fascinating! My brother told us about this special enclave of mid-century design and once we read about it we had to make the half hour detour; from the @nytimes “It’s a company town with a twist: It has an unusual depth of remarkable modern, postmodern and contemporary architecture, making it one of America’s most design-sophisticated communities. The Saturday Evening Post once called Columbus “Athens on the prairie” for its dozens of notable buildings, particularly by the Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen (including the strikingly spire-topped North Christian Church, 1964) and his father, Eliel Saarinen (the blocky-but-ethereal First Christian Church, 1942). Later contributions have come from Robert Venturi, I. M. Pei and Richard Meier, among others.”

SO WORTH IT.
